Open Position: Director of Finance
(At will, Exempt, Full-time Position or on Contract)

Salary Range: $110,572.80-$134,771.39 depending on qualifications.

About the Agency

Pajaro Valley Prevention and Student Assistance (PVPSA) is a nonprofit organization committed to improving the lives of children, youth, and families in the Pajaro Valley. Founded in 1991, PVPSA offers a variety of services focused on promoting student success and community well-being. Its mission includes providing health education, mental health support, and substance use services, while advocating for public policies that protect community health. PVPSA works closely with local schools, including the Pajaro Valley Unified School District, the County Office of Education (COE), local government, state agencies, and partnering nonprofits to deliver its programs. These collaborations help create a supportive environment that addresses the diverse needs of students and their families. 

 

About the Position

The Finance Director will be a strategic thought partner and will report to the Chief Executive Officer. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with experience in managing finance and operations at a senior level of an organization, preferably in a nonprofit or government agency. The successful candidate will be a participative senior executive and will lead and develop a team that works in the following areas: finance, business planning and budgeting, and general administration. This position plays a critical role in strategic decisionmaking as the agency continues to enhance and expand its quality programming. Duties & Responsibilities

​

Accounting and Finance:

  • Leads all the planning, monitoring, and reporting of all aspects of the organization’s finances in collaboration with the Executive Leadership team.

  • Provide strategic financial recommendations and guidance to the executive team and the Board of Directors

  • Develop annual program budgets and cash flow forecasting

  • Oversee the day-to-day accounting operations throughout the organization

  • Manage month-end, year-end close, and all fiscal reconciliation and reporting. 

  • Prepare monthly Journal Entries and review of allocations for the grant analyst to book in accounting software. Leads and coordinates annual audit activities in partnership with external auditors and the finance committee

  • Prepares, presents, and effectively communicates financial statements to the Executive Leadership Team, Finance Committee, and the Board of Directors, which include monthly, quarterly and annually YTD Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Activities vs. budget, and Statement of Cash Flows.

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant accounting standards (GAAP), tax regulations, and nonprofit reporting requirements.

  • Work with an external CPA firm on annual audits and is responsible for internal control procedures necessary to obtain a clean and timely audit opinion and management report from the auditors.

  • Coordinate monthly, quarterly, and year-end close and recording of accruals/deferrals and review documents for completeness, accuracy, and proper accounting period.

  • Oversee the financial and related compliance requirements, including, but not limited to, 1099s, 1042s, sales and use tax, CA non-resident withholding, and foreign withholding.

HR and Risk Management:

  • Oversee the HR Department

  • Advise the CEO in all matters of employee relations, including guidelines on hiring, benefits, compensation, preparation of salary scale, retirement plans, and compliance with all relevant state and federal employment laws and regulations.

  • Serve as the chief liaison for organizational risk management by managing and mitigating the organization’s exposure to risk.

Experience & Qualifications

​

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance; relevant advanced degree and certification such as CPA, CMA, MBA, MPA, or similar preferred

  • At least 3-5 years of overall professional experience in the field of finance and management; ideally 3+ years of broad financial and operations management experience in the nonprofit sector

  • Experience coordinating the budgeting process for an organization with a multi-milliondollar budget and significant grant funding.

  • Strong project management skills inclusive of the ability to lead and solve crossfunctional matters across the organization.

  • Aptitude for understanding and optimizing the financial administrative components of an organization.

  • A successful track record in setting priorities and accomplishing them promptly; keen analytic, organization, and problem-solving skills that support and enable strategic decision making.

  • Excellent written, communication, and relationship-building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

  • A strong work ethic with the following qualities: organized, flexible, dependable, goal oriented

  • Personal qualities that align with the core values of the organization include integrity, collaboration, respect, commitment, community and cultural responsiveness, and innovation.

  • Strong leadership, decision-making, and management skills and experience.

  • Strong working knowledge of internal control standards and application, and governmental and/or non-profit accounting methods and related laws, rules, and regulations

  • Advanced technical skills with accounting systems, reporting, complex spreadsheets, databases, query tools, pivot tables, and use of MS Office products.
